MAIN RESEARCH INTERESTS
The scientific and economic thought about woodlands and deforestation problems in Italy; the taxonomy of traditional agricultural systems in Italy; the built form of the contemporary cities; the social perception of heritage and of cultural landscape.

ACADEMIC CAREER
Graduated at the University of Milan (1970), he has taught at the Universities of Calabria (1974-1978), Siena (1977-1994) and Florence (since 1992).
Since 1997 till 2001 he was member of the Steering Committee of the Association of Italian Geographers (AGeI).
Since 2001 he is Counselor of the “Societa di studi geografici” and is Editor of the main editorial product of the Societa, the Rivista geografica italiana.
Since 2005 he is member of the Scientific Council of the Journal Mediterranée (Univ. of Aix-en-Provence / Marseille), since 2013 he is scientific advisor of the Journal Modern Italy (Routledge).
Since 2008 he is member of the Council of the PhD School in “Scienze storiche, giuridiche e geografiche” at the University of Siena, which in 2013 became part of PhD School in “Studi storici” of Siena and Florence joint Universities.
He has been for two terms (2001-2004, 2004-2007) President of the “Corso di laurea” (BA-MA) in “Geografia umana e organizzazione del territorio”, University of Florence; since 2013 is President of the “Corso di laurea magistrale” (MA) in “Studi geografici e antropologici”.
For two terms (2006-2009, 2009-2012) he has been Director of the “Dipartimento di Studi storici e geografici”, University of Florence.
