ACADEMIC CAREER

Sirpa Tani has worked at the Department of Teacher Education, University of Helsinki since 2001. In 2004 she was appointed to the full professorship in geography and environmental education. In her post she teaches future primary and secondary school teachers and supervises doctoral students who are specializing in geographies of young people, geography education and environmental education. In her doctoral thesis (1995) she studied representations of people-environment relations in Finnish fiction films which were shot in urban settings. Her research activities deal with geographies of young people, geography education and visual methodologies. She is especially interested in urban and cultural geographies, geographies of everyday life and emotional geographies. She works in several national and international research projects with other researchers. She has published numerous refereed articles, conference papers and book chapters in English and Finnish. She has also written geography textbooks for upper secondary schools with her colleagues. She is a member of several editorial boards of academic journals. Her most recent publications include the book “Young People: Cross-cultural Views and Futures” (ACER Press), which she co-edited with prof. Margaret Robertson
